From
the Curator
Dear Friends and Patrons:
Since I took over The University Gallery in the Fall of 1996,
we have grown immensely in the quality of the exhibitions, the artists
that we present and in the daily operations of the gallery. Improvements
to the gallery over the past two years have included the installation
of new wood floors, new paint and the conversion of the lighting system
to halogen, which brings out more of the color and vibrancy of the work
on display. We have also managed to expand our gallery hours so that we
are now open to the public five days a week.
While some of the improvements
that we have made are quite evident, most of the improvements have taken
place behind the scenes. It is sometimes difficult to explain how comprehensive
running the gallery can be, but there are a lot of details to be taken
care of in the preparation, promotion and presentation of our shows.
My staff is mostly responsible
for the tremendous strides that we have made and without them and their
hard work The University Gallery would not be what it is today. Our exhibitions
are a group effort; from the members of the Gallery Review Committee who
view all of the incoming portfolios, to the interns who make sure that
the press releases get out to the media, from the gallery sitters who
make sure the gallery is open to the public day-in and day-out to the
installation coordinator who handles artist relations and hangs every
show. Over the past several years, I have been able to visit other galleries
to see how they operate and can say confidently that The University Gallery
is one of the best galleries in the country.
With our 1998-99 exhibition
schedule, we've planned an exciting and diverse group of shows which will
present the work of artists from around the country and around the world.
Our exhibitions change every month and provide our audience with many
ideas, media and styles. We also have artists' receptions with each show
where our audience can come to the gallery and view the artwork, as well
as meet the artists in person.
As participation is vital
to our mission, it is important to get the word out and continue to build
our audience. We are here for the artists, the campus and the community,
so, if you have not had the opportunity to visit our space, make an effort
to come down to one of our shows and see what we're all about. I think
you'll be pleasantly surprised.
