Welcome

Welcome to UB, new and returning students. Throughout the Winter Break, we have looked into several of the issues that students had brought to us. Amongst them the concern about the lack of support for the Design department, Bursar, Buildings & Grounds, and the posting policy. Many problems need more than just a few minor changes, however we can speed up the process by helping out with several details. As started last semester we will continue updating student’s contact information. We will support PR efforts of our Design department, continue pushing for new billboards, and are administering our survey in these first few weeks. In order to be more available to the whole student body we have, through a lot of hard work, long hours of painting, scrubbing, filing, cleaning and organizing fully set up our Congress office. Special thanks to all the volunteers. Please feel free to stop by any time, we’re here for you. Sincerely, Student Congress

UB Olympics
Congress is working with Dan Maloney, the new Director of Wheeler Recreation Center to have a campus Olympics; a day full of athletic competitions and events. If you want to be involved, or for more information contact President Esther at X2076 or at ebessell@bridgeport.edu

~Rapture~

Friday Feb 8th Student Congress is hosting a party! 10-2 in the Social room of the Student Center. BYOB, there will be a live band, The first 50 women get a free rose, and the first 30 get a free champagne glass. Semi formal dress, please.

Hopeful Resolution
Well, the bulletin boards ordered at the beginning of last semester are…still not here. Until they come, are placed, and available, Congress is enforcing our rights to post fliers as stated in the Key to UB on page 57. If there are any problems with Security, or Buildings & Grounds taking down your fliers, please contact Congress.

Book fair
The Community Service Committee of Student Congress sponsored a book fair open to all UB students the first weekend after classes had begun this semester. On the 25th, 26th, & 28th Congress members supervised the fair in the Private Dining Room of the Student Center. The fair was held to help students searching for books who might be uneasy about trying the university’s new book-buying system. Also book-sellers were able to receive exactly the amount of money for each book that they priced and sold by the end of the weekend. Approximately $1600 was given back to students this way. After one day’s advertising a turn-out of 250 books gave us the hint that a great number of students have unwanted books to sell. For next semester, Congress is creating a system for UB students to buy, sell, and search for books via a link on our webpage.

Bowling Alley:

·There will be no bowling alley this semester. Instead, the money set aside for the bowling alley is being used to repair and replace the machinery so that the bowling alley can be operational.

Goals and Objectives

Joint Congress: The Joint Congress has made a renewed commitment to improve student life. Some special events we will host are the UB Olympics, A Congress open house, and some great parties.

Senate: The Senate is specifically focusing on generating funds and materials for UB. Already one fundraising activity is being carried out; exchanging old ink cartridges for computer and sports equipment, and we have met with George Mihalokos, who is in charge of fundraising for UB, to see what else we can do.

House of Representatives: School directories were handed out to the clubs, containing all the pertinent contact information needed to create an event. This will greatly reduce the amount of bureaucracy that clubs have to go through.

From the President’s Desk
The University of Bridgeport Board of Trustees recently decided to hold a celebration of the University’s 75th Diamond Jubilee anniversary as a way to reconnect with its over 30,000 alumni and the general community, with a clear and strong image of recent progress and future plans. The anniversary will run from Commencement this May (75 years after our incorporation) until Commencement 2004 (75 years after we graduated our first class) As I already announced, Professor James Lesko, head of our Design Departments, will be conducting a community-wide contest soon to design and choose a logo and slogan for the Jubilee promotion. The Board of Trustees has been discussing a number of creative ideas; I am also asking the faculty and students to propose ways in which they can participate. In a brief discussion with the Executive Board of the Student Congress, I made two possible suggestions: substantial service project(s) in order to underscore our value to the greater Bridgeport community or renovating or beautifying a particular area of campus. You may have much better ideas. What is most important is that whatever you decide to do, represents an expression of the student commitment to the University of Bridgeport. Although, no funds will be used out of the operating expenses, the Board of Trustees has begun raising special contributions for this purpose and would be responsive to modest support of good idea. I look forward to hearing about your ideas from Student Congress. Sincerely, Neil Albert Salonen President
