To the Editor:
I would like students and faculty to
know about a vigorous club on campus.
The Chess Club, established last spring, has so far had
two successful events this semester, and plans to have more.
On October 27, twenty-five players gathered in the Private
Dining Room for a five-round tournament.
The $100 first prize went to Paul Yasutake, who scored
4½ out of a possible 5 points.
Tying for second place with 4 points each were Atanu
Chakraborty, Konstantin Gunchev, and Erik Bernard.
Atanu won the $50 second prize on tiebreak.
On November 11, five players from Yale came to UB to play a
two-round match against five of our players.
Yale jumped to an early lead, winning the first round 3½-1½.
But UB fought back, taking the second round 3-2.
The games were hard-fought, well played, and often
dramatic. Representing
UB were Atanu Chakraborty, Konstantin Gunchev, Petre
Gueorguiev, Christoph Yasutake, and Aslan Abazekhov.
I want to thank all who participated in these events.
And I especially want to thank Socrates Philippou and
Christoph Yasutake—the President and Vice-President of the
Chess Club, respectively—whose organizational skills and
unflagging love of chess have made the Chess Club possible.
We are currently looking forward to a second match against
Yale sometime after Thanksgiving.
Anyone who wishes to participate in the rematch, or
wishes to become a member of the Chess Club, may contact
Socrates at chess@bridgeport.edu.
