UNIVERSITY OF BRIDGEPORT
BIOLOGY PROGRAM
The Biology program offers curricula leading to a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science with emphasis in the following areas: Biology, Zoology, Ecology, Marine Biology, Pre-Chiropractic, Pre-Dentistry, Pre-Medicine, Pre-Naturopathy, Pre-Veterinary. The biological training offered provides the student with either a basic core preparation leading to further study in graduate or professional school, or immediately marketable training for industry or government service. The program also offers a minor for students in other majors.

The Bachelor of Arts degree is for students seeking a broad liberal arts program. It is designed to allow students to obtain a minor that may be appropriate for some careers.
Requirements for Graduation with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology
- Completion of 120 total credits with a "C" average, 2.0 g.p.a., or better.
- Completion of the University Core Curriculum with the following courses: English C101, Mathematics 109, First Year Seminar, Fine Arts Elective, Humanities C201, Humanities Elective, Social Sciences C201, Social Sciences Elective, Capstone C390, Chemistry 103 & 104, and Modern Foreign Language.
- Completion of 40 credits in Biology with grades of "C" (2.00) or better including Biology 101, 102, 211, 223, 307, and 321.
- Completion of the following science courses: Chemistry 205 & 206 and Physics 201 & 202 or 107 & 108.
- Completion of the following courses are recommended as Biology or free electives: Biology 398 or 399, Chemistry 365, Psychology 103.
The Bachelor of Science degree is designed for students who wish to pursue a career that requires further study in graduate or professional school. Students interested in a career in scientific research or one of the health professions should follow the B.S. degree program.
Requirements for Graduation with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology
- Completion of 120 total credits with a "C" average, 2.0 g.p.a., or better.
- Completion of the University Core Curriculum with the following courses: English C101, Mathematics 112, First Year Seminar, Fine Arts Elective, Humanities C201, Humanities Elective, Social Sciences C201, Social Sciences Elective, Capstone C390, Chemistry 103 & 104.
- Completion of 48 credits in Biology with grades of "C" (2.00) or better including Biology 101, 102, 211, 223, 307, and 321.
- Completion of the following science courses: Chemistry 205 & 206 and Physics 201 & 202 or 107 & 108.
- Completion of the following courses are recommended as Biology or free electives: Biology 398 or 399, Chemistry 365, Psychology 103.
Students interested in pursuing concentrations Ecology, Marine Biology, and Environmental Science select for their electives courses appropriate for their interests, e.g, marine biology, invertebrate zoology, microbial ecology, analytical chemistry, and field work in environmental biology. Students should also participate in an intern or summer study program to gain practical experience in the field.
PRE-HEALTH PROFESSIONAL OPTIONS:
A Pre-Chiropractic option is available to students who seek to attend chiropractic school. Students who choose this option may elect one of two options. They may complete their bachelor's degree at the University of Bridgeport before entering Chiropractic school. Alternatively they may complete three years (90 credits) at the University and then transfer up to 30 credits of their basic science courses in Chiropractic school to complete the bachelor's degree. The University has articulation agreements with several Chiropractic schools including the University of Bridgeport College of Chiropractic for preferred admission of students who follow the Pre-Chiropractic option.
The Pre-Dentistry, Pre-Medicine, Pre-Naturopathy, and Pre-Veterinary options prepare students for entry professional schools in these fields. Students interested in these options should elect courses appropriate to their career interest: e.g. biochemistry, histology, microbiology, comparative anatomy, human embryology, parasitology, environmental health, and immunology. Students wishing to obtain a minor in Biology must take Biology 101, 102, 211, 223, and one additional biology course of at least 3 credits at the 200 level or higher.
